Dealing with flashing lights and noisy sirens

When many drivers, especially inexperienced ones, hear or see an emergency vehicle in their rearview mirror, it can be easy to be alarmed. It’s important not to panic – which might easily be one of the reasons for the appearance of such a vehicle in the first place. If you know what is expected of you in such situations, it’s much easier to handle the occasion effectively.

Simple steps to follow

The first, as previously mentioned, is to avoid panic. To think that you must instantly get out of their way is not accurate. You are obliged to provide a clear passage, but you should first make sure it is safe for you to do so.

So, what actions to take? Firstly, if it is not possible to instantly give way, keep calm and look for the opportunity to do so as soon as possible. If you can simply lower your speed and merge towards the left of the road, or stay in that position if that’s where you already are, then that’s fine. It’s also important to remember that if you are approaching traffic lights, your aim is to give way to the emergency vehicle even if you are proceeding at a green light.

Actions to avoid

Avoid sudden swerving movements; nervousness can cause you to forget for a moment that other road users need to be considered, both in their current position and in what they might intend to do. Don’t think about undertaking any manoeuvre which isn’t legal. Thirdly, avoid any action which might actually damage your own vehicle.

If you are involved in a not your fault accident

Hearing, and seeing, emergency vehicles at work can remind us all that we can be involved in a road traffic accident through no fault of our own. If this should happen to you, then obviously the health and safety of all involved is the most important consideration.

Then, should your vehicle be in need of repair, you may start to wonder how this will affect your daily life. The good news is, when other drivers are at fault, Australian Law states that you are entitled to a courtesy accident replacement car.

Should you ever be in this unfortunate situation, our Not My Fault team are ready to provide the professional help you require. Therefore, make sure you have our phone number with you; it’s 1800699034. Simply call us as soon as it’s safe to do so.
