According to census data, over two-thirds of Australians drive to work in their own cars, with barely one in every ten commuting using public transport. Read on to learn more about the number of people who drive here in Australia.

Driving to commute

There are 13.3 million registered cars in Australia at the moment, which equates to one vehicle for every 1.37 individuals of driving age in the country. A study by the social research organisation McCrindle, which looked at data produced by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, found that less than one in every ten families can get by without having a vehicle.

Moreover, seven in ten adult Australians who are employed or studying full-time use a standard car to commute to and from work, and almost nine in ten individuals use a car to travel to and from destinations other than their workplace. According to the findings of the survey, the number of commuters travelling by car has increased by 0.8 per cent when compared to five years ago, averaging at 655,939 people per day.

Mode of transportation

Travelling by motorbike or scooter is the only mode of transportation that has seen a decrease in share: walking is down 3 per cent, car sharing is down 0.6 per cent and using public transportation is down by 0.1 per cent.

Using public transport

One in five train commuters also drive for part of their route, while one in every ten bus passengers do the same. More than half of Australians said that the reason they didn’t utilise public transportation was that there was no service available or, if there was, the service was not available at times convenient for them.

How much does an average Australian drive?

The average Australian vehicle drives 12,881 kilometres per year, which means that Australians, in their combined 13 million cars, travel a total of 167 billion kilometres each year, which is the equivalent of travelling to Pluto and back 20 times per year.
