While some Australians drive long distances on a regular basis, for others, it’s a more unusual occurrence. Being prepared for and in control during such a family journey is important. This helps the driver focus, perhaps avoiding potential accidents caused by others. So, before setting out, here’s a checklist of actions to take…
Have a change of clothes to hand
Kids manage to make a mess in every situation! There can also be unexpected sickness or toilet accidents. Having a spare set of clothes with you reduces frustration in such moments.
Pack cleaning supplies
A pack of wet wipes can help deal with situations such as those mentioned above. If there is a partly-used pack in your vehicle from a previous journey, it pays to quickly check that they haven’t become dry. In current times, it’s also wise to have hand sanitisers with you for use whenever needed.
Use a rubbish bag
Whether this is a carrier bag or a bin bag, it’s handy for ensuring any rubbish or mess is quickly cleared up. Loose lying mess can move around and prove distracting for the driver.
Charge up devices and bring some games
We know that it’s useful to have devices or games to keep kids engaged during a long journey. This can become even more important should you suffer a delay due to a breakdown or the like. However, it’s important that these don’t suddenly distract the driver. Earphones or buds can keep the noise levels down, but sudden arguments or worse need to be avoided.
Wear sun protection
We all know how harsh and fierce our sun can be, so sunglasses, hats and factor 50 are obvious inclusions. So are liquids for regular rehydration during the journey.
Sadly, accidents happen
However well prepared, not at fault car accidents do happen. Thankfully, under Australian Law, you are entitled to a replacement courtesy car while yours is out of action in these circumstances.
So, if you are the victim of a not at fault car accident, make sure you have our number with you. It’s 1800699034. As soon as it’s safe to do so, call our helpful Not My Fault team and we’ll get to work on your behalf.
