3 tips for driving in windy conditions

Strong gusts of wind are very common on open stretches of road, and can sometimes blow vehicles off course, bring down tree branches and even blow other vehicles into your path. In this blog, we’ll be taking a look at some simple steps you can take to stay safe while driving in strong winds.

Drive slowly

Strong winds can blow underneath your vehicle and reduce its friction with the road. This can have a significant impact on its braking and handling ability, which may take you by surprise. Driving at a slow and steady pace will allow you to keep control over your vehicle in windy conditions while giving you more time to react if conditions were to change suddenly.

Plan your journey

Before you embark on a long journey, make sure you check the weather forecast first. If strong winds are predicted, it’s a good idea to plan your route and avoid areas where windy conditions will be more extreme, such as high or exposed roads (including viaducts, bridges and motorway flyovers) if possible.

It’s also a good idea to keep an eye out for places on the road where windy conditions could change suddenly, such as gaps in trees or roads that offer some form of shelter, such as a bridge.

Steer clear from large vehicles

In windy conditions, drivers of larger vehicles, such as trucks, will find it more difficult to maintain control. While they will be experienced in driving in these conditions and should be aware of the right precautions to take, it’s still a good idea to give them plenty of space on the road. Larger vehicles may be forced to change lanes or veer due to a sudden gust of strong wind.
